…”Looking back on my more than thirty years of personal experience as a Vaidya (Vaidya – Ayurvedic doctor, practitioner – see the explanatory glossary of the term in the appendix of the book. trans. note) in the science of Ayurveda, I continue to doubt how much it is quite appropriate to call Ayurveda the «Indian medical system».
It is clear that it belongs to India, but only as a “medical system”? Over the years, I have become convinced that labeling Ayurveda as just another “medical system” is a very short-sighted decision. As it can be concluded from the meaning of the word “Ayurveda” itself, it is a body of knowledge about life in its entirety. In my opinion, no other existing health promotion system succeeds in reaching the concept of health defined by the World Health Organization, which is:
“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or symptoms”.
Ayurveda not only delivers this promise of health, it delivers even more. It goes further and offers an even broader concept of good health, where besides physical, social and mental health, a person also acquires the spiritual dimension of health. A good student of Ayurveda will be one who realizes the limits of his individual cognitive abilities in this great science and philosophy, which has developed over thousands of years thanks to the experiments and intellectual work of the rishis (great spirits) of India.”…
